大妻中野の1年留学プログラムは新年度を迎えました。前年度 2022-23の1年留学生は全員帰国。学校に復学し、進級することができました。そして、新しい年度、2023-24 の留学がスタートします。これから、北米、オセアニア、アジア、ヨーロッパなど各方面での1年留学生が続々出発していきます。

その中で、新しい留学年度がスタートしたニュージーランド留学生から、新年度留学レポート第1号が届きましたので紹介します。どうぞ。

Otsuma Nakano’s One-Year Study Abroad Programs have started a new academic year. All one-year exchange students of 2022-23, returned to Otsuma Nakano and and advanced to their next grade.   From now on, one-year exchange students from North America, Oceania, Asia, Europe, and other regions will be departing one after another.

Among them, we have received the first report from a study abroad student in New Zealand.  Hope to enjoy reading the following.

Hello, I’m A.W. I came to a small town called Levin in New Zealand just about three weeks ago. Since this is my first month in the new environment, I’ve gone through a lot of　stunning events here. I had an introduction camp for a few days in Auckland before I enrolled school. I had chance to get to know Māori cultures by enjoy seeing Kapa Haka, Māori dance performance and traditional house which was made for respecting their ancestors. I made friends from all around the world who will be experiencing exchange.

After a few days of orientation, I moved to the Levin by plane, where I will be staying in for a year. Since July is winter in New Zealand, it’s really cold in here. The temperature is around two degrees in the morning and in the night.

I have one host sister who came from Italy and will also be studying here for a year. I also have two dogs and two cats as my family. Our host mother took us to several places in Levin. I once had mince pie which is New Zealand’s traditional pie. It tasted really nice, and it was understandable why people here love it.

My school is located in vast land surrounded by mountains. There are about 600 students in the school from Y9 to Y13. Students in my school get to choose from various subjects including Māori, Technology, Catering, and so on. New Zealanders choose less subjects, but they learn each subjects deeply. I chose English, Math, Chemistry, History, and Tourism. I’m glad that I can concentrate on subjects that I’m interested in. Some of the classes are being held with students from other years so rather than dividing classes by their age, they focus on the individual level of each student. I really enjoy Tourism class where I can learn how tourism　 industry contributes to the living of New Zealanders. Since we use technical terms in Chemistry, I sometimes struggle understanding it, but I still enjoy all the subjects I chose!

My school had open day for a whole day, inviting Y8 students from other schools, explaining about school systems. I helped out in Catering class with my host sister. Since we helped out the Catering class, we made a few dishes and offered to visitors while a teacher explained about how classes are held. It was a very busy day, but I really had fun talking to Y8 students.

I really look forward for all the unpredictable experiences I will go through in this exchange！

こんにちは！ニュージーランドのレビンという小さな町に来て三週間ほどが経ちました。留学生活の一か月目ということもあり、思った以上にたくさんのことを経験しました。初めにニュージーランド最大の都市であるオークランドで行われた研修に数日間参加しました。マオリの伝統的な踊りであるハカやご先祖様に敬意を払うために建てられた家などを見て、マオリの文化を学びました。世界中から集まった留学生とも友達になることが出来、楽しい研修となりました。

オリエンテーションの後に飛行機に乗り、私がこれから一年間暮らすレビンに移動しました。7月はニュージーランドでいうとちょうど冬の真ん中なのでとても寒い日が続いています。朝と夜には2度まで気温が下がります。

私の家にはイタリアから来た留学生のホストシスターが一人と犬と猫が2匹ずついます。学校が本格的に始まる前にホストマザーがレビンの様々な場所へ連れて行ってくれました。一度、ニュージーランドの伝統的なパイであるミートパイを食べる機会があったのですが、とれもおいしくなぜ人々に愛され続けられるのか納得の味でした。

私の学校は山に囲まれている広大な土地の中にあります。9年生（中3）から13年生（高3）まで約600人の生徒が在籍しています。この学校ではマオリや技術、ケータリングなど多様な科目から自分の興味に合った科目を選ぶことが出来ます。ニュージーランドでは一般的に少ない科目数を深く学ぶスタイルの学校が多いそうです。なので私は英語、数学、化学、歴史、観光の5科目の授業を取りました。自分の興味に合った科目に集中できるのはとても良いシステムだと思いました。いくつかの授業は他学年の生徒も混ざって行われることもあり、学年で分けるのではなく個人のレベルに合わせて授業を受けることが出来ます。私のお気に入りは観光の授業で、観光業界がどのようにニュージーランド人の暮らしに影響しているのかなどを学んでいます。化学などの授業は用語が使われることも多いため、理解に時間がかかるときもありますが、全体的に楽しい学校生活を送っています！

この間は8年生による学校見学が一日かけて行われました。ホストシスターと私はケータリングの授業説明のお手伝いに参加しました。先生がどのような授業が行われるのかなど説明している間に私たち生徒が作った簡単な料理を提供しました。とても忙しい一日でしたが、8年生の子たちとお話したりなど新しい経験が出来とても楽しかったです。

これから一年間、いろいろなことを経験していきたいと思います！
