From Canada – Exchange Reports:

From Ottawa, Drumheller Alberta, and Burnaby BC, all over Canada, new exchange reports reached out to us. The following four students share their impressive winter lives in Canada with us all.  Here we go!

Hello!  I’m Y.U, and I’m an international student studying at Glebe Collegiate Institutein Ottawa, Canada since February of this year.

February in Ottawa was freezing cold.  If you don’t have gloves, your hands will don’t work. This is the garden of my host family’s house.  It was piled up enough to fill the legs of the chair!

First of all, I would like to introduce you to the school.  Glebe Collegiate Institute in February.   However, due to the influence of the coronavirus, I go to school and take online classes every other day.  My school has a system in which the same subjects are taken from 9:00 to 13:00 (4 hours) from Monday to Friday.  I am taking Canadian History and English ESL classes.

The teacher will teach you everything you don’t understand.  At the end of the lesson, it’s fun to communicate with your classmates by playing a game to improve your English skills.

I go to school by bus.  Unlike Japan, Canadian buses have two cars or have a second floor.  And when you get off, press the button or pull the yellow string on the window.  Then you will hear a beep and stop at the bus stop.  I like this bus.

Next, I would like to introduce the places I visited after school and on holidays.  I skated on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, the longest skating rink in the world.  The Rideau Canal is a World Heritage Site.  The building in the back was very attractive.  I also went to a museum where I could learn about Canadian culture and nature.  I was very interested in ethnicity.

こんにちは！私はカナダのオタワにあるグリーブスクールに今年の2月から通っている、1年留学中のY.Uです。

オタワの2月は凍るほどの寒さでした。手袋がないと手が動かなくなると思います。これはホストファミリーの家のお庭です。椅子の足が埋まるほど積もっていました！

初めに学校について紹介したいと思います。グリーブスクールは2月から学校が始まりました。 しかし、コロナウイルスの影響で1日おきに登校とオンライン授業をしています。私の学校は、月曜日から金曜日まで同じ科目を９時から1時まで（4時間）受けるという仕組みです。私はカナディアンヒストリーとEnglishESLクラスを受けています。 分からないことは先生が全て丁寧に教えてくれます。授業の終わりには、クラスメイトと英語力を鍛えるゲームをして、コミュニケーションが取れて楽しいです。

私はバスで学校に通っています。カナダのバスは日本と違い2両になっていたり、２階があったりします。そして降りる時はボタンを押すか、窓の上につながっている黄色い紐を引きます。するとピンッと音がなりバス停に止まります。私はこのバスが好きです。

次に放課後や休みの日に訪れた場所について紹介したいと思います。私は世界最長のスケートリンクである、オタワのリドー運河でスケートをしました。リドー運河は世界遺産に登録されています。奥の建物がとても魅力的でした。 また、カナダの文化や自然について学べる博物館に行きました。民族についてなどとても興味深かったです。

Hello! I’m R.S. I am studying abroad at Drumheller Valley Secondary School in Canada.  I would like to talk about the events of February.  After two weeks of self-isolation, my dormitory life began in February and the school class started.

I am still having a hard time keeping up with all the English-only classes, but I am determined to do my best.

This month, all the students in the dormitory went to a shopping mall in Calgary.  I went clothes shopping with some of my friends, ate sushi for lunch since there was Japanese food on sale, and enjoyed talking with my friends over chicken at a Korean restaurant for dinner.

It was cold and snowing every day in Drumheller, which made me super happy because it’s hard to see snow in Tokyo.

There are still a lot of things I can’t do with the Drumheller due to the COVID, but I’m hoping the corona will be gone soon so I can enjoy it a lot.  Thank you for reading this far.

こんにちは！カナダのDrumheller Valley Secondary Schoolに留学中のR.S.です。 2月の出来事についてお話していきたいと思います。

2週間の隔離生活が終わり、2月から寮生活が始まり学校の授業も始まりました。 全部英語だけの授業にはまだまだ着いて行けず大変なことが多く辛いこともありますが、頑張ろうと思います。 今月はカルガリーにあるショッピングモールに寮の生徒みんなで行きました。 おともだち何人かとお洋服を買ったり、お昼には日本食が売っていたのでお寿司を食べたり、夜ご飯に韓国料理屋さんでチキンを食べながらお友達と沢山お話をして楽しみました。

そして、ドラムヘラーは毎日寒く雪がびっくりするほど降っていて、東京ではなかなか雪を見ることが出来ないのでとても新鮮で嬉しかったです。

ドラムヘラーもまだまだCOVIDの影響でできないことが多いですが、早くCOVIDが収まり沢山楽しめることができればいいなとおもっています。 最後まで読んでくださりありがとうございました。

Hi! I’m N. I. an international student studying in Burnaby, Canada. The temperature here in Burnaby averages about 7 degrees every day, and it rains about once a week. Here, I’d like to talk about what happened last month in February.

Firstly, I’m talking about my school. The first day of school was February 3rd.  At first, I didn’t know how to get on the bus, nor knew where is my classroom or what should I wear in my gym class, but my international student assistant was Japanese, so I could easily know about it.

By the way, I take P.E. class every weekdays and ELL cultural studies class three times a week (one of them is online class). In my P.E. class, usually we do some muscle exercise, walking and games with balls and pinnies. in my ELL class, we look up about history of each country, watch movies about Vietnam War (Forrest Gump) and Canada’s history (The Story of Us), and do some presentation about Canada’s physical geography. Anyways, now, it’s a piece of cake to get on the bus and join my classes.

Secondly, I’d like to talk about how I do spend weekends and holidays. Usually, we go to bed late on Friday, and we get up around 10 and have brunch.  February 12 was Chinese New Year’s Day, so I went to Korean restaurant with my host family and their immediate family.

The next day, February 13, was the first day of snow. I went to garden with my host family, and made snowman! We also went to elementary school’s yard and enjoyed making footprints and writing our name.

Finally, thank you for reading my monthly report till the end. I also enjoyed watching movie at home, going to outlet in Vancouver, going out to have lunch in Richmond, and many other things in February that I couldn’t write here.

みなさんこんにちは。カナダのバーナビー学区に留学しているN.I.です。ここバーナビーでは毎日平均して7度くらいの気温で、1週間に1回ほど雨が降ります。 このレポートでは2月に私が何をしていたかを書きたいと思います。

1つ目に学校のことについてです。学校に始めて登校して授業を受ける日は2月3日でした。はじめはどうやってバスに乗ればいいか、降りるときに黄色いひもを引っ張ることも知らずに、どこが自分の教室なのか、体育では何を着ればいいのか、私服登校なので日本みたいに着替える必要があるのか、など何もかもわかりませんでした。で も留学生のアシスタントの方が日本の方だったので、気軽に授業のことなど聞くことができました。

ちなみに私は今、毎日午前中に体育の授業とELL(English Language Learning 留学生や英語が第２言語の人に向けたクラス)の文化研究のクラスを週に3回(そのうちの1回はオンライン)とっています。 体育の授業では筋トレをしたり、歩いたり、ボールやゼッケンを使ってゲームをしたりして過ごしています。ELLの授業では、それぞれの国の歴史を調べたり、ベトナム戦争についての映画やカナダの歴史についての動画を見たり、カナダの地理についてのプレゼンをしたりしています。

とにかく今ではもうバスに乗ったり学校に行ったりするのは朝飯前になりました。

2つ目にどのようにして休日を過ごしているかを話したいと思います。 私たちは普段、金曜日の夜は遅く寝て、休日は10時ごろに起きて遅めの朝ご飯、早めのお昼ご飯を食べます。　2月12日は旧正月だったので、韓国料理のお店に行きました。

その次の日の13日はバーナビーで本格的に雪が降り積もったのが初めての日でした。　家のお庭で雪だるまを作ったり、近くにある小学校に行って足跡を作ったり、自分の名前を書いたりして楽しみました。

最後に、終わりまで読んでくださりありがとうございました。　ここに書ききれなかったことのほかに、お家で映画を見たり、バンクーバーの空港の近くにあるアウトレットに行ったり、リッチモンドにランチを食べに行ったりと、2月を存分に楽しむことができました。

3月も素敵な思い出を作りたいと思います！

It‘s my great pleasure to share my report with you!

Nice to meet you everyone!  I’m M.M. an international exchange student studying at Burnaby Mountain Secondly School in BC, Canada right now.  This is my first English report , so I am very nervous. However, it would be great for me to be able to reach out to you to let all know about my life in Canada.

It’s been a month since I came in Canada.  It’s March, but Canada is still very cold. Therefore, I was surprised that most students here were not wearing a lot when I went to school first time. Also, it snows here. Unlike Japan, this is light and fluffy snow, so the snow is suited for playing in the snow.

To begin with, I would like to talk about my school. Burnaby Mountain Secondly School is tremendously large, and there are a lot of nature around my school. Also, my school has many students. Canadian, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese…… There are people from a lot of countries, so it is interesting to be with them. I have a lot of Korean friends, and I am learning Korean from my friends. Unfortunately, my school doesn’t have club activities due to the influence of COVID-19, but I can spend great times with my friends after school.

Next, I would like to talk about my homestay. My host family is Chinese Canadian, and is a family of four. Meals are super delicious every day, so I am looking forward to having meals. I have gained weight because of that….My host family always provide me with a lot of previous experiences. such as tobogganing, cooking. Also I usually cook suppers with my host family. Did I come here in order to learn cook? Lol ! When we are cooking, talking what happened on that day is one of my favorite things.

皆さんはじめまして！私は現在、カナダ、BC州にあるバーナビーマウンテンセカンドリースクールに1年留学中のM.M.です。 これが初めての英語のレポートなので、緊張しています。ですがカナダでの生活を皆さんに伝えることができたら嬉しいです。

さて、カナダに来て早一ヶ月が経ちました。３月になりましたが、カナダはまだ寒いです。 それなのにほとんどの生徒が薄着なことに初めて学校に登校したときは驚きました(笑)またここでは雪も降ります。日本と違い、軽くふわふわした雪なので雪遊びには最適です。

それではまず初めに、学校のことについて話したいと思います。私の通うバーナビーマウンテンセカンドリースクールはとても大きく、学校の周りは自然豊かです。また、生徒が本当に多い学校です。カナダ人、イタリア人、中国人、韓国人、日本人、、、いろんな国の方がいて面白いです。私の友達は韓国人が多く、韓国語を教えてもらっています。残念なことに、今は、コロナウイルスの影響でクラブはないのですが、放課後は友達と話したり楽しい時間を過ごしています。

次はホームステイについてお話したいと思います。　私のホストファミリーは中国系カナダ人で四人家族です。食事が毎日すごく美味しくて、いつも楽しみにしています。 それによって太りましたが…..ホストファミリーはいつも私にたくさんの貴重な体験をさせてくれます。例えばトボガンぞりや料理。また普段一緒に夜ご飯を作っています。　私は料理を学びにここに来たのでしょうか(笑)料理を作る最中に、その日、学校であったことを話すのも私の楽しみです。
