From Ablerta, Canada Drumheller Valley New Exchange Report

Hello, everyone!  I’m Ayano Fujinaka. I’m an exchange student to study abroad for a year at Drumheller Valley Secondary School in Canada. It’s been four months since I left Japan.  In this report, I would like to share how I spent Christmas break.

At first, I spent most of this break with my host mother’s family.  I went to watch a movie, Frozen2, where I watched a movie with no Japanese subtitles for the first time. I was nervous about whether I would understand the story, but I could enjoy it because this story isn’t so complicated and difficult. After enjoying the movie, I want to watch the Japanese version of Frozen2 again after I come back to Japan.

Second, we spent Christmas Eve with my family.  My family likes playing games. So we played games and slid on the sled and walked in the field together. In the day, other relatives of my family came to our house, so my family began to prepare dinner earlier than usual. I cooked Japanese tempura with family by trial and error. I’ve never made it before, so I feared whether I could make it well. In the end, we could make tempura not bad, and I was very happy to hear from them “It’s tasty! and good!” We ate tempura with only salt, so I want them to give it a try to have it with tentsuyu.

At last, Christmas came to us! There were so many presents under the tree. We woke up at about seven, we opened Christmas presents. The presents were for all people in each of the big socks. Also, I got a sock of Frozen2 from my family the day before. In the sock, we all could get some presents each from Santa Claus.

In Japan, only children get presents from Santa, but my family gives some Christmas presents to each other. I was surprised at those many presents from my family because I’ve never got so many presents ever. I think this culture is so great.  That day, we went to relatives’ house that came to our house the day before, where we had a good meal, and enjoyed talking to each other.  Then, we exchanged presents, which was called Secret Santa.  We prepared a present that someone would be happy to receive. Also, the maximum price of a gift is fixed. And then, we draw lots and select presents in that order.  Also, we did a brushfire outside. It was the first time in the winter for me, but I was very warm, so it was very fun.  I was very happy to have my first Canadian Christmas.

I will continue to do my best from now on. Thank you for reading my report!!

まず、私たちは、Frozen2(アナと雪の女王2)を見に行きました。
