本校では今、25名が世界の6か国で1年留学中です。アメリカ、カナダ、イギリス、アイルランド、フランス、ニュージーランドです。まもなく、さらに、オーストラリア、ドイツへ留学する生徒が加わり、8か国で約50名の生徒が留学することになります。その中で、アメリカで留学中の生徒は、7名、7つの都市で留学中です。その一人、Sakura さんが、ペンシルバニア州から留学のレポートをしてくれます。どうぞ。

Hi guys! I’m Sakura Mii. I’m an exchange student studying in America for a year.  Now I am staying in a small town in Pennsylvania called Amber. It takes us about two hours to go to New York, and 40 minutes to Philadelphia from here by car. I usually go shopping with my friends in the city on weekends.  Almost two months passed since when I came here.

By the way, it is my pleasure to introduce my school life in this report.　My school starts at 7:30 AM.  Almost all students go to school by car or school bus.

About my class:  The classes I’ m taking are chores, global history, art media, and Spanish.  What’ more, I will take Introduction Business in the coming semester two.  We have various schedules from Day 1 to Day 6, so I am always confused every day.  Sometimes, we have IE when we can pick up one favorite class among a lot of subjects.  It’s really interesting.  I always move from a room to another every period because we do not have a “classroom” like a school in Japan.  My school is so huge, where there are A Hall to I Hall, so I got lost for a while at first.

I had been really eager to customize my own school locker, but now nobody use it because we have our own laptop.  Math is much easier than that of Japan, where we can use calculator.  Lunch time is separated into from A lunch to C lunch, when  some different time lines are going on every day.  So it was difficult for me to make friends with for the first month.  We can buy pizza, wraps and tacos at cafeteria.  I want to try it some day.

Now let me show my favorite classes, which are Global History and Spanish.

Global History: At the Global History class, we can learn various perspectives which are different those in Japan.  It’s very interesting.  I am learning World War II.   Also, I’m writing essays about a topic I can choose from topics related to World War II.

I choose my theme about Atomic Bombs strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Many people choose this topic because they are interested in it.  Some people think ” it was nessary to drop atomic bombs in Japan.”  I am really sad as a Japanese.  But my English skill is not good enough to argue their opinion, so I was getting impatient.  At last, I asked my teacher, ” Are almost American people think that atomic bombs were necessary?”  He answered, ” I don’t know because I am not well informed about it.”  Then, I thought it is very complicated problem between Japan and America.

Espanol:  I like Spanish class because it’s similar to English. For example Math in Spanish is las matematicas.  When I cannot understand Espanol, I always ask my friend who is an AFS exchange student from Paraguay.

Now I would like to explain my School Events – Homecoming.  In Spare week we can wear a different costume each day.  For example,

Monday: Pajama Day (PJ Day), Tuesday: Twins’ Day,  Wednesday: No school because it is a Jewish Holiday.   Thursday: Luau Day ( Hawaiian Day) ,  Friday: Blue and Gold Day (School Color),

I went to football game on Friday called “Hoco Game.”  I bought a cupcake whose color was blue and yellow.   But it’s too sweet for me.  So, I could not eat at all.  To my surprise, American people eat cookie dough without eggs.  I will introduce my club in the next month.

My time table, Homecoming and Global History Essay Topics from which we choose

みなさん、こんにちは、アメリカに留学中の三井桜です。私はペンシルベニア州の小さな街 Amblerに留学しています。ニューヨークから車で2時間、フィラデルフィアまで40分と比較的都会に近く、週末には友達とショッピングに行ったりします。

さて、私の学校生活を紹介します。朝は、7:30から授業が始まります。ほとんどの生徒は車かスクールバスで登校します。私はコーラス、世界史、美術、スペイン語などを選択していて、2学期からはビジネスを新たにいれるつもりです。 Day 1から Day 6 まであり、常に違う教科なので、毎日、混乱しています。

たまに、IEと呼ばれるさまざまな教科から選べる日もあり、とても興味深いです。アメリカの学校はクラスが特に決まっていないので、1時間ごとに移動します。

この学校はとても広く、A Hall から I Hall まであり。初めは迷子になりました。廊下にあるロッカーをカスタマイズして使うのが憧れでしたが。今は、Laptop があるため、教科書がなく、誰も使っていません。数学は日本に比べると簡単で、何より計算機が使えます。

ランチの時間はAランチからCランチと分かれており、せっかく友人ができても、ランチの時間帯が違うことが多く、最初は大変でした。スクールランチは、wrap とtacosとビザがメインで売っています。今度、ぜひ試してみたいと思っています。

私のお気に入りの授業は、Global HistoryとSpanishです。Global Historyは日本とは違った新たな視点から学べるのでとても興味深いです。私は、今、第二次世界大戦を学んでいます。いくつかのトピックの中から、１つ選んでessayを書くのですが、中に、長崎と広島の原爆についてのテーマがあったのでそれを選びました。このテーマは、皆、興味があるのか、選んでいる人が多かったです。ですが、中には「原爆は必要だった」という意見を持っている人も多く、日本人として悲しくなりました。しかし、まだ、私の英語力では十分に反論できないので、もどかしい気持ちになりました。先生に「アメリカ人のほとんどは原爆に賛成なんですか？」と聞いたところ、「あまり詳しくないから、よく分からないな」と言われました。私は、その時、アメリカと日本にとって複雑な問題なんだなと感じました。

スペイン語は英語に似ているため、とても好きです。分からなかったら、同じ団体の留学生にDMで質問しています。

次に行事について紹介します。 Homecoming Spare Week というのがあって、その週は、毎日日替わりで仮装をします。こんな具合です。

月曜日：パジャマデー（通称 PJ Day)、火曜日：双子コーデデー、水曜日：ユダヤ教 Holidayのため休日、木曜日：Luau デー（ハワイアンな日）、金曜日：ブルーアンドゴールドデー（スクールカラー）

金曜日には、Hoco Game と呼ばれるHomecomingの日に行われるフットボールの試合を見に行きました。売店で、スクールカラーのカップケーキを買いましたが、甘すぎで食べられませんでした。また、驚いたことにアメリカでは、クッキー生地を生で食べます。
