This is America!! – Vol.10

Tuesday, August 4^th,

It’s partly cloudy and sunny today.  In the forests of USJ campus, the sound of cicadas was echoing against the blue sky.

Today, we had another special dance class with Ms. Susan Murphy.  As the same as the yesterday’s lesson, first of all, we started warm-up exercises with icebreaking.  And then we moved on to the authentic American jazz dance lesson.  In harmony with the sound of music, students performed many phrase movements of jazz dance.  We come to realize that various compositions of the slow and quick movements can make emotional expressions of their bodies.

We were all impressed with the skillful advice from Ms. Susan Murphy.  Every single word she gave us made the bodies of the students keep on moving smoothly and adequately.  We can learn English words with real actions.  Specific body movements and English words go mixed together.  Her words penetrate Otsuma Nakano students’ bodies and souls.  Finally we made a bigger dance performance with the beginning, middle and ending.  This is the final dance art work we made together.   Everyone looked happy and satisfied with their great creativity.  This is a real active arts.

What’s more, today we had an interview with the radio podcast program producer of USJ.  Some of the Otsuma Nakano students answered the questions from the interviewer of the program.  The interviewer asked us what is the most interesting thing you have done or seen in America, what you think about USJ, what you miss most about Japan and what some differences are between going to school in America and in Japan. 

The interviewee students looked a little bit nervous, but they could make it very well to answer the questions.  This interview is going to broadcast on the internet radio in this campus.  I do hope many people will have a chance to hear this interview and it will inspire people in America to get interested in Japan and its cultures.  Of course, the opportunities are one of the greatest experiences for the students to be more confident in expressing yourselves.

今日のハートフォードは雲と青空がミックスした天気。日本の夏空を思わせます。日本人の耳には蝉しぐれが聞こえてくる。これも文化のダイバーシティです。

今日も昨日に引き続き、スーザン・マーフィ先生の特別ダンスクラスです。昨日と同じようにメンバー同士のアイスブレイクと十分なウォームアップから始まります。今日はアメリカン・ジャズダンスのそれぞれの動きを、音楽に合わせてパートごとに練習するところから入りました。緩急の動きの組み合わせが、表情豊かな表現を作り出すことを学んでいきます。

スーザン先生の非常にスキルフルな指導に感銘を受けます。彼女の一言一言の掛け声で、生徒たちの動きがスムーズに的確になっていくのがよくわかります。こうした具体的な動きを伴った言葉の学習法はとても有効です。言葉が体を動かすように体に浸み込む感覚です。最後に、全員で一つの流れを持ったダンス作品を完成させました。皆、自分たちの創作したダンスに満足して、この授業を終えました。これがまさにアクティブ・アートです。

今日はもう一つ、大学のラジオ局からインタビューを受けたことを記しておきます。本校の生徒が、インタビュアーから、アメリカでの体験について、セント・ジョセフ大学をどう思うか、日本との違いをどんなところに感じるかなどを質問され、それに答えました。皆、しっかり答えられました。このインタビューをできる限り多くの人たちに聞いてもらい、日本の文化をしるきっかけになればと思います。もちろん、この体験自体が彼女たちの大きな成長のステップとなります。
