Another new note on one of the Otsuma Nakano exchange programs from Australia reached us.  Sui Hirayama reports to you her very interesting and insightful experiences there with all of St. Andrew’s Catholic College.

G'day mates!  I'm Sui Hirayama from Otsuma Nakano. Today I will write about my weekend and the Pentecost Mass held at school.

On Friday, May 18th we had a Mass called the Pentecost Mass. All the students from prep to year12 and teachers gathered in O block where we do assembly. The Christian feast day of Pentecost celebrates the ten days after Ascension Thursday and the final feast of the Easter period. It commemorates the coming of the Holly Spirit upon the Apostles and the followers of Jesus Christ.  As part of the Liturgical Calendar, we had a Mass at St Andrew's. We did prayer and sang gospel songs. It was my first time participating in a Mass and celebrating Pentecost, so it was an interesting experience and was good to learn more about the Christian culture.

On Sunday my host family took Ayana and me to the Rainforestation Nature Park in Kuranda. This is a theme park where we can explore the rainforest and experience the indigenous cultures. After we arrived we saw an aboriginal dancing performance. It was very interesting because I haven't seen this before and I learned that each dance has meaning. We saw indigenous people play playing instruments that I have never seen before. Also, it was a good opportunity to learn about aboriginal culture. After that we went on a tour in an old army duck. This is a tour explores World Heritage rain forest riding on an amphibious World War Ⅱ vehicle. We saw many unfamiliar trees and plants and beautiful butterflies.  

In this park, there is a place called Koala & Wildlife Park where you can cuddle koala and take pictures. We can also feed the kangaroos and the wallabies from our hand. I have seen koalas and kangaroos before but I haven't seen them so close and fed or cuddle them before, so I was happy to take pictures with them. It's going to be a wonderful memory. I was surprised to see a huge crocodile which was 6 meters long. I heard that there are some wild crocodiles in the river neat where we live. I hope I won't see them while I'm in Cairns.

皆さんこんにちは。セントアンドリュースの平山です。このレポートでは、週末のできごとと学校で開かれたペンテコステ・ミサについて書きたいと思います。

5月18日の金曜日、学校でペンテコステ・ミサというミサがありました。幼稚園から12年生までの全校生徒と先生がOブロックという集会などを行う場所に集まり行われました。キリスト教の祝祭日であるペンテコステはイエス・キリスト昇天の10日後とイースターの最終日です。イエス・キリストの復活、昇天後集まっていた信徒たちの上に神からの聖霊が降ってきたできごとのことです。典礼カレンダーより、セントアンドリュースではミサが行われました。私達は、お祈りを捧げたり、聖歌を歌ったりしました。このような本格的なキリスト教のミサに参加するのは初めてでしたし、今までペンテコステという言葉すら知らなかったので、キリスト教の文化に触れるいい機会になりました。

日曜日にホストファミリーが浮田さんと私をキュランダにあるレインフォレスレーションネイチャーパークに連れて行ってくれました。ここは、熱帯雨林やアボリジニーの文化に触れたり、体験することのできるテーマパークです。私達は、着いてすぐにアボリジニーの人たちのダンスを見ました。アボリジニーのダンスを見るのは初めてでしたしそれぞれのダンスに意味があることも知ることができました。また、今まで見たことないような楽器で演奏しておりアボリジニーの文化に触れるいい経験になりました。次に第二次世界大戦でも使われてアーミーダックという水陸両用車に乗って世界遺産である熱帯雨林を散策しました。そこにしかない沢山の木や植物そして美しい蝶を見ることができました。

このテーマパークにはコアラ＆ワイルドパークという場所があり、カンガルーやワラビーに餌やりやコアラを抱っこして記念写真を取ることができます。以前にもコアラやカンガルーを見たことはありましたが目の前でしかも抱っこや餌やりなどはしたことがなかったので一生の思い出になりました。私が驚いたのは、園内に6メートルほどの大きなクロコダイルがいたことです。つい最近、ケアンズ南部で4.5メートルほどの野生のクロコダイルが発見されたというニュースを見ました。私の住んでいる近くの川や沼にも野生のクロコダイルがいると聞いたので会わないことを願っています。
