From New Zealand, Report from Sara H. at New Plymouth Girls’ High School

Hello. I’m Sara Horiguchi. I am a new one-term exchange student who is studying abroad in New Zealand now.  In this report, I will talk about my host family.

I had been supposed to stay at the hostel of New Plymouth Girls High School, but unfortunately, it was closed because of summer holiday, so I was with my host family for only a day.  My host family is farmer. So, many animals and vegetables such as cabbage. I went around the farm with my host mother. She said, ”This is a small farm”, but I didn’t think so because there are 11 cows and chickens in the farm.

That night, I ate mixed meats and vegetables for dinner, and I made dessert. It was so delicious. I used fork and knife, but it was too difficult for me to use. After that, we enjoyed playing a card game with my host family. It was New Zealand’s unique rule, but it was fun if I got used to it.

In the next morning, I ate eggs laid by the chickens there and enjoyed some bread with the eggs. The bread tasted so great! I have never eaten such delicious bread ever before.  I felt New Zealand’s bread better than Japan’s bread.

こんにちは。 私は新しいターム留学生として、ニュージーランドに留学している堀口紗良です。今日は、ホストファミリーについてお話します。私は、ニュープリマス・ガールズ・ハイスクールの寮に泊まる予定でしたが、その日は夏休み中で寮が閉まっていたので、この日だけホストファミリーの家に行き、泊まりました。このホストファミリーは農家でした。だから、キャベツやニワトリ、牛などたくさんの動物や野菜がありました。私は、ホストマザーと一緒に農場を回りました。 彼女は自分たちの農場を小さな農場だと言っていましたが、私はそうは思いませんでした。なぜなら、11頭の牛と鶏がいたし、少し歩くと、ホストファミリーの家が分からないくらい広かったからです。

その日の夜は肉と野菜が混ざっているディナーを食べ、私たちが作ったデザートを食べました。とてもおいしかったです。 私はフォークとナイフを使いましたが、私にはちょっと難しすぎました。 その後、ホストファミリーとカードゲームを楽しみました。 それはニュージーランド独自のルールでしたが、慣れれば楽しかったです。

翌朝、パンとホストファミリーの家で買っているニワトリが産んだ卵を食べました。 パンの上に卵をのせ、食べました。私はこのパンを食べた時、とても感動しました。ニュージーランドのパンは日本のパンよりも美味しいとと感じました。
