UCL Japan Youth Challenge 2025  レポ―ト

今年も、7月25日から8月4日まで、「UCL-Youth Challenge 2025」が開催され、本校生徒がチャレンジしました。　このプログラムは、世界のトップ大学の1つであるイギリス・ロンドン大学UCL で、大学の先生と日英の高校生が、グローバル課題やこれからの世界について議論し、世界の大学を体験するプログラムです。

立教英国学院でのガイダンスとアイスブレイクから、ケンブリッジ大学での講義、研究者や大学院生とのセッション、そして、UCLで、今年度のテーマ 「宇宙開発」 について、ワークショップや探究に取り組みました。　今年は、オックスフォード大学のハローキャンパスを訪問し、宇宙研究の最前線に立つ研究者の講義もありました。　国内、海外を問わず広く大学への進路を考える機会になりました。　参加した生徒の振り返りレポートです。

私がUCL Japan Youth Challenge（UCLJYC）に参加したきっかけは、ヨーロッパの大学に興味を持っていたからです。イギリスやヨーロッパ諸国の大学は専門性に優れ、独自の学びの環境があると聞いていましたが、それを実際に体験したいと思い参加を決めました。

このプログラムで最も大きな収穫は、自分の意見を積極的に発信できるようになったことです。普段の学校生活では、自分一人が発言することも多く、発言にためらいを感じることもありました。しかしUCLJYCでは、教授への質疑応答やワークショップで意見を交わすことが当たり前で、皆が自由に発言していました。特に教授への質問では、多角的な視点からの問いかけに刺激を受け、自分も堂々と意見を述べられるようになりました。

また、学問に対する姿勢にも大きな変化がありました。教授や学生との交流を通じ、知識の習得だけでなく、問いを立てて議論する過程こそが学びの本質だと理解しました。UCLのように幅広い分野を深く学べる環境に強く惹かれ、そこで学びたいという思いが一層強まりました。

今後は、この経験を踏まえて英語やフランス語の学習に励み、自分の好奇心に沿って学びを深めたいと考えています。そして将来は、国際的な舞台で自らの意見を発信できる人材になりたいと思います。今回の経験を支えてくださった事務局や先生方に心から感謝しています。

I decided to be parts in the program of the UCL Japan Youth Challenge because I have long been interested in studying at European universities, including the UK, which are renowned for their specialized and professional education. However, I believed that simply reading about them was not enough—I wanted to experience the academic atmosphere firsthand. When I learned about this program, I felt it was the perfect opportunity, as it allowed me to visit multiple universities in just two weeks.

Through this experience, I gained the confidence to express my ideas more openly. In my usual school group work, I often hesitate to speak up, worrying about the balance of voices in the discussion. In contrast, at UCLJYC, sharing one’s thoughts was natural, whether in workshops or in question-and-answer sessions with professors. I was especially impressed by how participants asked questions from many different perspectives, which encouraged me to contribute my own views without hesitation.

This program also deepened my desire to study at a university like UCL, where students can pursue their curiosity across diverse fields and explore subjects in great depth. I will continue working hard on my studies, especially languages, so that I can realize this goal. I am truly grateful to the teachers and organizers who supported this opportunity.

私はUCL Japan Youth Challenge 2025に参加し、忘れられない十日間を過ごしました。参加を決めた理由は、新しい挑戦を通じて視野を広げたいと思ったからです。特に、これまで宇宙について深く学んだことがなかったため、このテーマをきっかけに新たな関心を見つけられると考えました。また、イギリスの大学授業を直接体験できることも大きな魅力でした。

今年のプログラムでは「Space for the Future」をテーマに、宇宙を中心に医療、デザイン、AIなど多彩な21の講義を受講しました。　教授の講義は問いかけに満ち、答えを一つに絞るのではなく、思考を深める過程の重要性を実感しました。ワークショップでは社会問題を議論し、最後はシンポジウムで成果を発表し、協働すること学びました。

英語での議論と対話も大きな学びでした。　最初は失敗を恐れて英国の参加者と話すことにためらいがありましたが、「まず話す」ことを意識して挑戦すると会話が弾み、学んだ表現を使いながら英語力が向上しました。同時に「英語を学ぶのは楽しい」と再確認できたことも成果でした。

さらにDay3の「Meet Cambridge Researcher Event」では、研究者やボランティアから入試制度や研究環境について話を聞き、進路選択に役立つ具体的な知見を得ました。参加者同士の交流も刺激的で、多様な考えに触れる中で柔軟な思考を養えました。

この体験を通じ、未知の分野に挑戦する姿勢と、英語を使って学ぶ喜びを得ることができました。今後はこの学びを大学受験や将来の進路に活かし、国際的に活躍できる人材を目指したいと思います。

By participating in the “UCL Japan Youth Challenge 2025”, I was able to obtain countless pieces of knowledge and memories that I will surely treasure forever. In this UCL JYC program, we took lectures, discussed global challenges we humans face today in the workshop, and gave a presentation as a team to present our final findings.   Since the theme was “Space for the Future,” many lectures explored space-related issues, but we also learned from about twenty-one sessions on diverse topics such as medicine, design, and artificial intelligence. I joined this program because I wanted to challenge myself, gain new experiences, and broaden my perspective. Having never studied space in depth, I was eager to discover new fields that might spark my curiosity. I was also drawn to the chance to experience authentic university-style lectures from prestigious professors, which I felt would help guide my future studies and applications.

One of the most valuable lessons I gained was the importance of speaking English without fear. At first, I hesitated, worried about mistakes. But once I focused on simply expressing myself, I found conversations flowed more smoothly and became enjoyable. When I encountered unfamiliar expressions, I immediately asked for clarification and practiced them in conversation, which quickly improved my vocabulary.

I also learned about British universities and admissions during events such as the “Meet Cambridge Researcher” session, where I could consult directly with researchers from varied backgrounds. These insights will influence how I approach my studies and shape my future path. Overall, this program made a huge impact on me, which leads me to truly appreciate this unimaginably amazing opportunity.
