Dr. May-yi Shaw’s Special Lecture on “Female Leadership”

本校は、文部科学省より WWL（World Wide Learning）拠点校 に採択され、国内外の大学・国際機関・企業との協働を通じて、世界とつながる新たな学びのカリキュラム開発を推進しています。

その一環として、協働機関であり高大連携協定を結ぶ テンプル大学ジャパンキャンパス（Temple University, Japan Campus） より、Dr. May-yi Shaw（ハーバード大学大学院修了） を講師に迎え、10月30日、本校の English for Academic Purpose I（高校2年生選択科目）において特別授業を実施しました。

授業テーマは “Female Leadership” ― 女性のリーダーシップとは何か。　グローバルな視点からジェンダーギャップの現状をデータに基づいて分析し、日本社会が抱える課題や変革の可能性について、英語によるディスカッションを展開しました。

Dr. Shawは、Penn State University, Wellesley College, Harvard University Graduate School に加え、東京大学、京都大学、Yale-NUS、NYU Abu Dhabi など、世界各地の大学で研究・教育に携わってこられた国際的な研究者です。

授業では、生徒に対して次々と問いを投げかけ、考えを引き出す アクティブかつインタラクティブなスタイル により、教室はまさに「世界標準の学び」の熱気に包まれました。

生徒たちは、日本のジェンダーギャップを示す具体的データに衝撃を受けつつも、課題を自分ごととして捉え、「変化を生み出すリーダー（チェンジメイカー）」として行動する意欲を新たにしました。

国際的な知見に触れ、自らの言葉で考え、語る経験は、生徒たちのグローバル・マインドセットを確実に育んでいます。

What struck me most in Dr. Shaw’s lecture was how much lower Japan’s gender gap ranking was than I had expected. I had assumed Japan would be around 58th out of 148 countries, thinking that although gender equality was still a work in progress, it was steadily improving. However, learning that Japan actually ranked 118th was truly shocking.

I also encountered the term “glass ceiling index” for the first time. Hearing that Japan still has a 21.3% wage gap between men and women made me question deeply why salaries can differ for the same job. Everyone in the class agreed, “That’s not right,” and I understood clearly why this issue is so significant.

After class, I reflected on the traditional idea that “a woman’s happiness lies in marriage and raising a family.” It made me wonder whether such thinking may actually make life more difficult for women today. I strongly felt that we must create a society where everyone can live authentically, without being limited by gender roles. I now believe there is much we can do to make society more inclusive and comfortable for all women, and I hope to take the lead in that effort.

Since I have long been interested in gender equality, I found this class truly fascinating and inspiring. Through Dr. Shaw’s lecture, I learned the importance of understanding social realities through data, and it gave me an opportunity to reexamine my own perspectives.

シャウ先生の講義で最も印象に残ったのは、日本のジェンダー・ギャップ指数の順位が自分の想像よりもはるかに低かったことです。私は、148か国中58位くらいだろうと思っていました。日本はまだ完全な男女平等には達していないけれど、少しずつ改善していると考えていたからです。しかし、実際には118位であると知り、大きな衝撃を受けました。

また、この授業で「ガラスの天井指数（glass ceiling index）」という言葉を学びました。日本では男女の賃金に21.3％の差があると聞き、同じ仕事をしていてもなぜ給料が違うのか、強い疑問を持ちました。クラス全員が「それはおかしい」と共感し、この問題の深刻さを実感しました。

授業後、「女性の幸せは結婚と家庭にある」という古い価値観についても考え直しました。こうした考え方こそが、現代の女性を生きづらくしているのではないかと感じました。誰もが性別に縛られず、自分らしく生きられる社会を築くことが大切だと強く思います。これからの社会をより包摂的で心地よいものにするために、自分がその変化をリードしたいと感じました。

以前からジェンダー平等に関心がありましたが、この授業を通してデータから現実を見つめることの大切さを学び、自分の考えを見つめ直す機会にもなりました。とても刺激的で意義深い授業でした。

Before this class, I had often heard the term “gender gap” in social studies or home economics, but I had never really thought deeply about what it meant in real life. Through Dr. Shaw’s lesson, I discovered so many surprising and eye-opening facts. With Japan now having its first female Prime Minister and society beginning to change, I found this class especially timely and insightful.

As a world history major, I’ve often felt frustrated by how women have been overshadowed throughout history due to male-dominated societies. This class helped me understand the reasons behind this issue and motivated me to think about what can be done to help more women play visible and influential roles in society.

As a member of the Model United Nations, I often have opportunities to discuss global issues, and I hope to apply what I learned from this class to take more concrete actions. In future discussions, I want to express my ideas with stronger conviction and greater persuasiveness.

この授業を受ける前は、社会科や家庭科の授業で「ジェンダー・ギャップ」という言葉を耳にすることはありましたが、その背景に何があるのかを深く考えたことはありませんでした。シャウ先生の授業では、驚くような事実や新しい気づきがたくさんありました。日本が初の女性首相を迎え、社会全体が変化し始めている今、この授業はとてもタイムリーで示唆に富んでいると感じました。

世界史を選択している私は、歴史の中で女性が男性中心の社会構造によって存在を隠されてきたことに、以前からもどかしさを感じてきました。この授業を通して、その背景にある理由を理解するとともに、女性がより多く社会の中で目に見える形で活躍できるようにするために何ができるのかを考えるようになりました。

私は、模擬国連（Model United Nations）に参加しており、世界の課題について議論する機会があります。この授業で学んだことを活かし、より具体的な行動につなげたいと思います。今後の議論では、自分の考えをより確信をもって、説得力をもって発信していきたいです。

このように刺激的で意義深い授業をしてくださったシャウ先生に、心から感謝しています。
