From Australia, Report from Minori S. at St. Andrew’s Catholic College

Hello everyone! This is my third report from Australia. In this report, I would like to talk about my holidays.

On February 29th, a neighbor, Lily, came to my home. Lily goes to St Andrew’s Catholic College, and she is very kind because she greets me every time when we meet. She learns Chinese in school and learns Japanese in her house. I was surprised at variety of learning languages in Australia.  We learn English at first in Japan, but in Australia, the official language is English, so there are many choices for them to learn. When I asked my host family about their language class they take, they answered various languages like Spanish, French, and Japanese. Also, my host father has fine command of German, so children hear his speaking and can speak little. Especially, my host brother sometimes asks his father “How do you say in German?”  Also, I felt they didn’t hesitate very much to speak out their learning things.  If I was, I thought I would hesitate to speak by shame and fear of making mistakes. Then, I felt the difference of attitude for languages from us. While I’m staying here where it is normal to speak English, I’d like to make a habit of speaking it, and connect future learn.

The day of afternoon, I went to Crystal Cascades. I guessed that I can see crystals from the place’s name, but I was surprised that the real is forest and waterfall. While we were walking the way to big waterfall, my host father described me plants, and we saw tortoises in the river. My host father is very knowledgeable person, and he told me such as “This plant will become material for furniture when it will grow up.”, “These leaves’ hair is painful if you touch.” If I guided foreigners to tourist spots in Japan, I would not be able to do like him. People say Japanese people don’t quite know own country, I thought it is sure.

I can’t believe that the rest of my Australia’s life is only 4 weeks. I’d like to learn many things from this interesting experience. Thank you for reading.

みなさんこんにちは！これは私の３度目のオーストラリアのレポートです。このレポートでは、私の休日についてお話したいと思います。

２月２９日に隣人のリリーが遊びに来ました。リリーはセントアンドリュースに通っていて、会うと必ず挨拶をしてくれる優しい子です。彼女は学校では中国語を学び、自宅では日本語を勉強しています。私はオーストラリアに来て、学ぶ言語の種類に驚きました。日本では初めに英語を学びますが、英語が公用語のオーストラリアでは選択肢がたくさんあります。私のホストファミリーにどの授業を取っているのか聞くとスペイン語にフランス語、日本語と様々です。また、私のホストファザーはドイツ語が達者で、子供たちもそれを聞いて少し話せます。特にホストブラザーは「ドイツ語では何というの？」と聞いたりしています。また、学んだことを話すことにあまり抵抗がないように感じました。もし私だったら恥ずかしさや間違っているのではないかという不安でためらってしまうと思います。このとき私は言語に対する姿勢の違いを感じました。この英語を話すことが当たり前のこの地にいる間に英語を口に出す習慣を付けて、これからの学びにつなげていきたいと思います。

この日の午後には、クリスタルカスケードに行きました。名前からクリスタルが見られるのかと思っていましたが、実際には森と滝で驚きました。森の中は木陰だからか、川の近くだからか、涼しく感じました。大きな滝に続く道を歩いている間、ホストファザーが植物の説明をしてくれたり、川の中にいるカメを見たりしました。ホストファザーはとても物知りで、「この植物は成長したら家具の材料になる。」「この葉の毛は触ると痛い」などと教えてくれます。もし私が日本に来た人に近くの公園を案内することになっても、同じようにはできないと思います。日本人は自国のことをよく知らないといいますが、確かにそうだと思いました。

私のオーストラリアでの生活が残り４週間しかないことが信じられません。この楽しい体験のからたくさんのことを学びたいと思います。読んでいただきありがとうございました。
