From New Zealand – Cooking in Kiwi style and Maori’s Culture from SHGC

Another report from New Zealand is now updated.  Mei Hagiwara shares it with you from Sacred Heart Girls College in New Plymouth. Here we go!

Hello, everyone. I’m Mei Hagiwara, an exchange student for one year at Sacred Heart Girls College in New Zealand. I have spent about two months here. But I can’t believe it because time passes too quickly. Recently, I have begun to think one year would not be a long time. Now, I’m going to write about four things in this report: swimming, movies, cooking lesson and making a kete.

I go swimming once a week with my host mother and sisters. I wanted to get some exercise before coming to NZ, so I told my host family that I am keen to swim. Therefore, I am glad that I can swim here. I swim more than one kilometer at one time.  On the day when I go swimming, I get tired, but it is fun and I think it is a good opportunity to exercise.

Secondly, I went to a movie theater with my host family and I watched Aladdin. I could understand almost all of the story plot, which made me super happy. I realize that I have been improving my listening skills in New Zealand. Also, I watch about three or four movies a week at home. I still watch movies with subtitles, but I want to understand without subtitles.

Next, I am going to write about a cooking lesson. One day, my host mother invited a man who is a famous cook in New Plymouth to give a lecture at the place where my host mother works.  My host sister and I could join this event. These dishes which he cooked were as beautiful as art. For example, we made pasta from dough. But a leaf was sandwiched between dough. So, I shared with you a picture of these foods.

Finally, I would like to report about making a kete. Last week, I went to make a kete with international students from my school. It is a part of Maori culture in New Zealand. We made bags from Flax leaves. They are very nice bags!

Thank you for reading my report. See you for my next report!
