A new report came to us from Arisa Odagiri, a one-year exchange student who is studying at New Plymouth Girls High School in New Zealand. Today I would like to share her updated report with you.

Hi everyone! I’m Arisa Odagiri.  I’m a one-year exchange student in New Zealand. Five months will have passed soon.  The holiday starts next week.  So, I feel time passes very quickly because two terms have been over in a week.

Today I will write about my school’s practice exams, weaving with international students and my host brother’s birthday.

It was the examination period from September 12th to 19th.  All students from Year 11 to Year 13 took these exams. It took students 3 hours to take one exam, but everyone was able to leave there when she finished her own test.  I took five exams. These exams were so hard for me, because I couldn’t use my dictionary.  I think that the English exam was most difficult, because this test is the one which English natives take as a subject, so the level was very high.  But I think this is a good experience because we don’t do the same in Japan.

I joined a Maori wearing workshop with international students. I made a traditional Maori bag. This bag was made by weaving grasses called Harakeke (Maori name).  Making a bag was a bit difficult, but I enjoyed this workshop.  I think it was good for me to know the tradition of Maoris.

We had my host brother’s birthday party on Sunday. I made a birthday cake with my host mother. It was chocolate and banana cakes with icing on the middle of them. It was so delicious. I was so surprised at this party, because I had never been to a kiwi birthday. It was so much fun.

皆さんこんにちは！ニュージーランドに留学中の小田切有沙です。もうすぐで5ヶ月が経とうとしています。来週からはホリデーが始まります。ですから、もう2タームが終わったということになるのでとても早いなと感じています。

今回は学校であったテスト、マオリのワークショップ、ホストブラザーの誕生日について書いていきたいと思います。

9月12日から19日までテストがありました。このテストはYear 11 からYear 13の生徒が受けるものです。１つのテストにつき3時間かかるのですが終わった人から退出することができました。私は5教科受けました。辞書を使うことができずとても大変でした。中でも英語のテストが1番大変だと感じました。なぜなら英語を母国語とする生徒たちがほとんどなのでレベルがとても高かったからです。しかしこのようなテストは日本では受けることができないのでとても良い経験になったのではないかと感じています。

インターナショナルの生徒と一緒にマオリのワークショップに参加して来ました。マオリの伝統的なカバンを作りました。このカバンはハラキキという草で作りました。カバンを作るのは少し大変だったのですがとても楽しかったです。マオリの伝統を知ることができて良かったと思います。

日曜日にホストブラザーの誕生日パーティーがありました。私はホストマザーと一緒にケーキを作りました。チョコレートとバナナのケーキを作ってうまくできてよかったです。私は日本ではこのような大きい誕生日パーティーをやったことがなかったのでとても驚きました。とても楽しかったです。
