– Raise LA Special Lecture and Workshop for Otsuma Nakano GIS –

On Saturday, September 1st, 2018 Otsuma Nakano was treated to a special guest lecture and workshop with a Mr. Shafic Tayara, a native of Torrance, California (USA). Mr. Tayara is the Owner/Operator of an expanding clothing brand named FBN and operates two hair salons of the same name in Los Angeles (Redondo Beach and Beverly Hills). He also runs a program called ‘RAISE LA’ to help address the devastating problem of homelessness in Los Angeles County, (Mr. Tayara provides free hair-cuts and motivating talks with those unfortunate individuals who live on the streets). Both FBN and RAISE LA aim to establish positivity and self-confidence in others.

Students listened to him talk about his background and also heard a lecture about the homeless issue in Los Angeles. In groups, they were tasked to brainstorm different ways for 3 different entities to help alleviate the growing number of homeless (government, NPOs, and individuals). The groups then made short presentations, all of which were very well thought out and spoken. Mr. Tayara, teachers, and administrators were all impressed by our student’s critical thinking and public speaking abilities. Overall, it was a very productive and beneficial day for our students to hear from a self-made entrepreneur about following their dreams and giving back to their communities.

9/1に、本校のカリキュラムの１つである「GIS – Global Issue Studies – グローバル課題探求」の高校1年生の授業で、アメリカ・カリフォルニア・ロサンゼルス（トーランス）の起業家、シャフィク・タラヤ氏を招いての特別授業が行われました。タラヤ氏は、FBNというブランドを立ち上げ、ビバリーヒルズなどでもビューティサロンを成功させているビジネス・パーソン。顧客には、世界的な”セレブ”の方々もたくさんいます。How Cool!!

一方で、タラヤ氏は、ロサンゼルスのホームレスの自立援助などの社会活動に非常に力を入れています。アメリカの起業家精神とは、ビジネスでの成功を目指す気持ちと社会的弱者への積極的な関わりへの高い意識が両輪であることを教えてくれました。Raise LA!!

生徒たちは、ロサンゼルスの華やかな光と同時に現実にある影を受け止め、そして、それにどのように私たちは関わっていけるのか、グループで討論。最後に英語で、それぞれの考えを全員でシェアすることができました。日本だけでは学べないことがたくさんあります。So, what about Tokyo?

このワークショップには、Taraya氏に共感する本校の教員、Mr. Todd Sibley (Main coordinator of this program), Mr. Willie Vickers, Mr. Kieran McMahon を始めとして、アメリカ人教員、イギリス人教員、日本人教員が一緒に参加し、まさにグローバルな課題探求の場となりました。
