From America – Study at the University of Saint Joseph #8

Academic Thursday came to us with very foggy morning. It looks like a "mystical scene" in some kinds of movies. However, it was getting clear and beautiful sunshine was also coming back again.
Today, we were so fortunate enough to have a special education class by Dr. Ann-Monroe Baillargeon. She is Dean of School of Education at University of Saint Joseph as well as a professor of education and special education for children with some disabilities. She has outstanding teaching careers around the world to teach preschool kids, children who need special cares, middle school and high school students, university students and adults who want to be any kinds of teachers.
In the class, she gave our students two activites. One is interview activity that every student make interviews with each other about 9 topics and then all of them gave feedback to each other for sharing information about their interviewees. This is a typical icebreaking activity for new school semesters in America to be social with each other.
The other activities was comparing Japanese high schools and US high schools. Otsuma Naknao High School students were required to point out what they think is unique to Japanese high school. Very strict school rules, bunch of mini-tests, taking off shoes inside, over showing respect to senior students,… Otsuma Nakano students wrote their ideas about distinctive things on Japanese high school. And then, Dr. Ann Monroe discussed each point with students to ask students about more details and the reason why it would be unique to Japanese high school. Students were giving it try to answer her questions with thinking about them very critically. Questions without correct answers! This lesson style is the exact "Active Learning" or "Learners oriented study."
In the afternoon, Prof. Kathleen Mullin, took us to one of the most famous places in West Hartford. That is the Mark Twain. Mark Twain is a well-known writer as the author of the Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and the Adventure of Tom Sawyer. A super energetic lady, whose narrative style should be similar to the one of Mark Twain, made an explanation about how Mark Twain lived in this house. His many works made a great impact to the American Society in 19th century to the beginning of 20th century as a super "writer" His impact has been so huge that even now many people are inspired by his jobs when they fight against racism and discrimination.
Looking through their own eyes, they can get what they have never thought about.

今朝は霧につつまれたセントジョセフ大学のキャンパス。幻想的な映画のシーンのような雰囲気がただよっています。空気はひんやり。しかし、日中にはいつもの青空と太陽の光。けっこう暑くなりました。
今日の午前は、教育学の特別クラス。先生は、セントジョセフ大学教育学部の学部長、アン・モンロー教授です。アン教授は、世界の様々な国で教えたことがあると同時に、幼児から中高生、大学生、そして先生のキャリアを求める大人まで教えているまさにスーパーな先生。教育学の実践と理論の両面でのプロです。
アン教授は二つのアクティビティを用意してくれました。一つは、アイスブレイクも兼ねたインタビューアクティビティ。9つのトピックについて、できるだけ多くの人にインタビューをしてまわります。そして、それを一人一人が発表する形でフィードバック。アン教授が一つ一つにコメントしていきます。ソーシャルスキルの具体的な修得方法の一つです。
もう一つのアクティビィティは、日本の高校とアメリカの高校を比較して論じ合うもの。本校の生徒たちが自分で、日本の高校に独特のもの、アメリカの高校にはないであろうことについて、考え、ホワイト・ボードに書き出していきます。そして、その違いについて、アン教授がさらに質問をしながら、具体的な説明を生徒に求めていきます。そして、なぜそれが日本の高校に独特のものであると思うのかについても考えていきます。正解のない問いを皆で考えていくアクティブラーニングです。
午後は、キャサリーン教授の引率で、大学の近くにあるマーク・トゥエインの家（博物館）を訪問しました。エネルギッシュなガイドの方の説明を聞きながら、マーク・トゥエインがどのような人だったのか、そして何故、彼の作品が今も多くの読者を獲得し、アメリカの社会に大きな影響を与え続けているかを考えました。常に社会常識にとらわれずに、偽善を見抜き、物事の本質を捉える感覚。それは、彼が体験的に多くの旅の中で、さまざまな仕事を経験し、いろんな人と関わったからです。マーク・トゥエイン曰く、「実際に旅をして、自分でその場に行って、しっかりと見ることで、偽善や偏見を打ち破ることができるのです。」
